Tony Judt (1948-2010) RIP

"The problem with Israel... is not... that it is a European 'enclave' in the Arab world; but rather that it arrived too late. It has imported a characteristically late-nineteenth-century separatist project into a world that has moved on, a world of individual rights, open frontiers, and international law. The very idea of a 'Jewish state' - a state in which Jews and the Jewish religion have exclusive privileges from which non-Jewish citizens are forever excluded - is rooted in another time and place. Israel, in short, is an anachronism." (Israel: The Alternative, New York Review of Books, 23/10/03)

Just like Lebanon where Palestinians are refused basic human rights-

or in Jordan

They however can be citizens of Saudia Arabia as long as they are not Jewish

Mike, care to explain how they ended up in Lebanon and Jordan in the first place?

Could that be a rhetorical question? I don't believe another infinitum debate about the Middle-East along the lines of which came first, the Jewish question or the Palestinian question is particularly fruitful. There is enough material, along these lines on the Internet to consume several lifetimes. I for one have a limited lifespan and do not have the luxury to indulge in this pursuit (unlike the immortal MERC blogger). It would be much more fruitful to address what could be done to reconcile the two parties rather than polarizing material which the blog seems to be specialize in.

Don't be shy, Mike, just one sentence will do.

As you have ignored the original posting and the associated links I would have, as a gentleman, let you have the first go at answering your own rhetorical question. But as you seem to insist on me stating the bleeding obvious. I will indulge you. The Palestinians refugees fled to Jordan and Lebanon from the area now occupied by Israel.
Now do you want to go through the rest of the standard set piece debate (another rhetorical question)?

MERC said...

Hm... fled, eh? Any idea why, Mark?

Sorry... Mike.

Brian... dammit... you appear to have scared him off!

Hi Merc and Brian,
Sorry about snubbing the last few posts as I was busy watching the Gruen Transfer and The Chaser and I have an early meeting today. In the mean-time thanks for the entertainment but I still prefer the ABC on a Wednesday night.

Oh, by the way MERC you still haven't responded to my original post about the cynical treatment of the Palestinians languishing in camps in Lebanon and Jordan. With friends like these who needs Israelis?

Speak to you later.

Welcome back, Mike. What say you to Israel riding to the rescue of those Palestinians and inviting them to return to their homes and lands in Israel in line with UN resolution 194?

MERC said...

Sorry, Mike, you can only open a second front once we've sorted things out on this one, OK?

Mike Reich said...

That's OK. I wasn't really planning on opening a second front until the end of winter, but I couldn't resist.

My question?
