If, as I suspect, federal Labor leader Bill Shorten will simply ignore his party's 2018 National Conference call "to recognise Palestine as a state," will he at least have the fortitude to resist Zionist threats such as this?:
"The Zionist Federation of Australia has written to Bill Shorten and opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Penny Wong to express concerns about the party's position after they confirmed Labor would recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital only in the final stages of of a two-state solution... In the ZFA letter, obtained by The Australian, president Jeremy Leibler seeks clarification of Labor's position after Australia became one of the few countries to formally recognise West Jerusalem as Israel's capital while pledging to recognise a future Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem. 'A move by a future Labor government to reverse such an important position would be considered a hostile act to Australia's strongest ally in the Middle East,' Mr Leibler writes. 'Should Labor form government, we... urge the ALP not to reverse the decision to recognise West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel'. Senator Wong has tweeted that Labor did not 'support unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and in government would reverse this decision'." (Labor warned against undoing Israel move, Rosie Lewis, 17/12/18)

"Australia's strongest ally"? What has Israel ever done for Australia? Australia has certainly fought in wars on israel's behalf and was involved in its founding, but I thought that "ally" was a two-way relationship.
O/T MERC but I need to vomit either verbally or physically after reading Laura Tringle on the ABC News website this morning. Why do I subject myself to this rubbish?
Suddenly "Mad Dog" Mattis, the butcher of Fallujah, the person who said that it was good fun to shoot people, has become a national hero in the US and equally lauded by LT. Apparently Mattis' letter of resignation is "as lethal as any military hardware". What world does she live in? Here is LT in action:
"The combination of Mr Trump's announcement on Syria, Vladimir Putin's endorsement of it and Mr Mattis's resignation, is one of the moments in the Trump presidency when the potential implications of the US President's reckless behaviour is even more concerning than the way he behaves."
Reckless? Did she not listen to what he said in his presidential campaign? He stated clearly that he would get out of Syria. Like Trump or not, he is at least, at last, delivering on what he promised. I wish more politicians would do the same.
Meanwhile, how many Australian troops are embedded with the Americans in Syria? I note that the UK and French say that their militaries are not leaving. Here is a remarkably candid assessment from an analyst (Renee Westra) in DFAT:

G, re the matter of Trump's announcement on Syria, you'll no doubt be interested in tomorrow's 'big picture' post.
Look forward to it MERC
Does anyone remember Ben Zygier or the Australian passport scandal? Three Australian passports were found to have been used by Israeli Mossad agents conducting a hit on Mahmoud Al Mabhouh in Dubai 2010. Some 'ally' indeed!
